There’s a Reason You Have a Friend Who Wants to Open a Craft Brewery

The trend goes back to 1991 when small businesses got a boost.

There are over 4,500 craft breweries in the United States. In 2014, craft brews first eclipsed Budweiser’s sales by volume, and now they account for over 20% of all beer sales.

Although craft growth has notably stabilized in the last two years, its collaborative communities continue to be a challenging force to national corporations.

The craft craze goes back to 1991 when taxes on big name corporate beer doubled to $18 per barrel. But to keep innovation a-brewin’, small craft beer producers were only taxed at $7. Thus came about the rise of a common trend: one of your friends constantly talking about opening a small brewery.

Just goes to show you how one little break can transform an industry.
